It came from the word cennan which means as a noun "make known, declare, acknowledge" originally, "make to know”. As a verb, it’s a nautical abbreviation for the word “kenning” which means range of sight.

It’s “enlightenment by meditation” in which there is no consciousness of self (American Heritage Dictionary). Rather than through faith and devotion, enlightenment can also be attained through intuition and self contemplation. This is usually under the guidance of a teacher. This monastic form of Buddhism was introduced in China (6th century ad) and in Japan(12th century).
